"I love America more than any other country in the world and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually." ― James Baldwin
Hi Friend,
I have closed my shop today in solidarity with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), immigrants, and others being targeted by ICE raids and enforcement actions.
Right now, countless people in our communities are living in fear. Families are being separated, both adults and children are being detained without due process, and human beings are being treated without dignity or basic rights. ICE agents are using spyware software to document protestors exercising their first amendment rights to create a catalogue of "domestic terr**ists." They're executing human beings in the street as the government lies to our faces. In the last 24 hours, the government arrested four Black journalists and activists, Don Lemmon, Trahern Jeen Crews, Georgia Fort, and Jamael Lydell Lundy, for documenting protests in Minneapolis.
This moment echoes painful patterns throughout American history, from forced removal and genocide of Indigenous peoples to the enslavement of African peoples, of Jim Crow, Japanese internment, family separations at the border, and more.
Here's one, swift way you can help:
Contact your senators and demand they abolish ICE and work toward humane immigration reform. Let them know their actions will determine your vote in upcoming elections.
Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard: (202) 224-3121
First time caller? Welcome! Use the 5Calls app for scripts and step-by-step guidance.
For donations, please consider donating to MONARCA (monarcamn.org), Unidos MN (unidos-mn.org), DHH Church (Dios Habla Hoy / dhhmn.com), and/or ILCM (Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota / ILMN.org)
If you are on strike today and have the privilege of time, please spend an hour or two educating yourself on the real history of our country. The more we know, the more we care, the more we feel compelled to act.
While I'm deeply grateful for your interest in my work, some things matter a hell of a lot more than business as usual. Thank you for understanding.
In solidarity,
